Fulmination

A continuity containing all threads by Diaeresis, ChaosMagic, and Decima, plus some self threads spinning off or prequeling to those. Most threads are part of the same broader multiverse/ storyline, though some aren't. The central multiverse started with the "murder girlfriends" (the Ellie/ Fate ship) and their assorted threads and peals, but has recently expanded to include other main ships. There's several different branching continuities and multiple separate peals, only some of which know about each other.

Beginning Fulmination

This guide is a supplement/ alternative to fulmination recs (which mostly sorts individual threads or continuities by rough genre/ what itch they scratch) and Fulmination Reading Orders (which goes pretty deeply into how the entire continuity ties together), as well as the Star Wars Peal notes + reading orders and the lightning peal's index and peal-specific reading orders.

This guide, however, is meant to outline where you could start. This is not, strictly, a reading order, but is instead notes/ observations and advice on where the easiest places to dip your toes in are. (There are other ways to sort reading; this isn't a guide to reading in order of publication, for instance, and it assumes the reader likes knowing who the characters are and what the backstory is.) Descriptions try to keep spoilers to a minimum; the other pages linked above have more detailed notes, though.

Your First Threads

These threads have zero prerequisites except a basic familiarity with the canon, are linear and self contained, and introduce the characters in depth. All of the standalone 'top' threads mentioned in the Reading Orders page would fit here, of course, if one of those catches your eye. But if you're unsure where else to start...

if you like silliness:

down here on my knees

This is also a pretty short thread - 25k words. It doesn't peal to anywhere yet, or tie into other plots, but it gives a very solid introduction to the Lily and 2B templates, and a pretty good introduction to Fate and Ellie. It's set in an AU of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, where the video game mechanics are taken literally, and also someone has installed D/S AU, sexy armor, and kemonomimi (catgirl/ doggirl/ etc) mods. Features: twincest, D/S, referenced polyamory, and general crack taken seriously.

a long way for heartbreak

This one is really short, at under 10k words. It focuses on Lily/ 2B, with some notable Lily/ Ellie. It's about a magical girl 2B who dies and gets yanked into a reincarnation CYOA... And decides she'd like a vacation, and optimizing the CYOA towards D/S total power exchange kinkiness sounds really fun. Is part of the wider Roses of Villarosa glowfic trend. Not quite explicit, but some parts definitely get pretty racy sexuality-wise.

if you like angst and hurt/ comfort:

learn the rapture of that cruelty

This is a shorter thread, at roughly 11.5k words. This one does still contain plenty of silliness and flirty romance, but has a more serious/ angsty focus in the background. The basic plot is a modern college AU of Carmilla, featuring a lesbian vampire and her unsuspecting roommate. The major characters are Fate and Eridani, and this is a pretty good easy-to-get-into introduction to the Eridani template.

if you like a good long story:

plan for noon and plan for night

This is strongly recommended as a first step. It's a Harry Potter rewrite, set in a single world with a straightforward narrative, featuring multiple native versions of the two main templates (Ellie and Fate) who show different perspectives on their templates. It is, however, about 205k words long. The first seven threads contain fairly minimal need for content warnings (roughly in line with canon), but the eighth thread is explicit and, while it's an epilogue thread unnecessary to understanding the main story, it's referenced in later peals featuring the noon continuity. This continuity does tie into the wider Fulmination 'verse, so it's also a good foundation for focusing on the broader peals.

About villains: all witches burn

This is another good first step, which primarily focuses on the more villainous aspects of the murder gfs. It's set in Harry Potter in the Marauders Era, and is especially recommended as a follow-up to the noon continuity. It's stand-alone, however, so it can be read as a first thread. It's about 45k words, length-wise, and is fully self contained.

About villains-as-heroes: no hands of fate

This is a retelling of the Lay of Leithian/ Tale of Luthien and Beren from Tolkien's works, with a bit of a twist. It includes only one Ellie and one Fate, and is very good for reading an emotionally intense murder gfs story with a burn-time somewhere between 'jump immediately into bed' and 'a novel later...'. It's also about 45k words, length-wise, and is fairly fully self contained, but ends on a mild cliffhanger...

Which is resolved in the next thread: married to the devil

This is a peal of fate-thread and burn-thread. It's pretty short (only 6.6k words), and neatly ties up the hanging threads in the other two. It doesn't yet tie into the wider multiverse, however. See also: Devil Peal

This is a very large, complicated peal, and its reading order with related reading is separately written here. This was the first peal, and it includes the counter peal at the end, as well as some series and many standalone threads. The central peal likely won't show up again in other threads, though some universes might have a version peal to another peal, and downstream threads with depealed characters might continue into new stories.

fulmination recs

These aren't, properly, reading orders, and don't include all possible related reading. They're recommendations for threads, split by what sorts of moods we think they feel. See Fulmination Reading Orders for series plus dependencies.

Murder gfs (Ellie/ Fate) threads are all femslash first and foremost, and they're all centrally romances. The majority of threads contain S/M relationships, some contain D/S, and polyamory is decently common.

Power couple (Lily/ 2B) threads are mostly femslash, though some might be m/f. The vast majority are heavy D/S, with some light S/M. Polyamory is less common but still pretty common to some extent. Most power couple threads are also murder gfs threads.

Other pairings of note are the Eridani ships (Eridani/ Ridis, Eridani/ Fate, and Eridani/ Lily). These don't have ship names (or a lot of threads) yet, but are almost always going to be femslash, with a good bit of S/M and D/S.

Other pairings include Lily/ Ellie, Fate/ 2B, Lily/ 2B/ Leia of mixed-author ships, and Ellie/ 2B, Lily/ Shmi, Fate/ Lily, and Fate/ Fate altcest of self-thread ships. Most of these haven't appeared more than once yet, and some are primarily spokes off of a polycule.

Proper Murderkitty Representation

These are 'classic' murder gfs. They're generally the most light-hearted threads, with a focus on romance (and committing murder while flirting) than serious emotions, plot, or fixing anything (unless the thing that needs fixed is a paucity of sexy lesbian serial killers, they're all over that). Expect warnings throughout for serial killers, torture, and violence.

The one, the only, the original murder gfs thread. This is a massive thread (7,777 tags for thread proper) with complicated dependencies. The other things you need to read to get the full story add a bit over 18,000 tags. Luckily, it has an index.

This thread is best if you're after a really long yarn, the historic development of the ship, murder fun times, cool power use, a giant peal, big emotions, and a minimal focus on side characters.

Harry Potter setting, except it's early in the Marauder's Era and voldemort is replaced with a sexy lesbian. Ellie/ Fate as central pairing, with some Fate/ Fate. Has femslash, polyamory, rival-mance, hot dark ladies, and both a world and romance plot.

A solid contender for 'most problematic murder gfs thread.' That's very impressive, given the murder gfs.

The basic premise is a role swap of Elesse and Palpatine, based off the Elesse + Anakin Star Wars prequels rewrites (see reading orders above), though you don't need to be familiar with those to keep track of this.

Features a female Anakin who doesn't fall to the dark side so much as swan dive, femslash, grooming, adult/ 17 year old + wide age gap + teacher/ student relationship, accidental parent/ child incest, BDSM, dissociation, a plural main character, villain protagonists, and murder. And also Jedi Master Palpatine + Mace Windu as notable side characters, who are both fun.

 

Long Fic

These are, as the header suggests, fics on the longer side. Many are series and/ or peals.

See above! This is a very long series. The main thread has 174,484 words across 7,778 tags (including the top post). With all the Fulmination side reading directly referenced in the main peal thread, you're looking at an additional 220,184 words across 10,733 tags. The two downstream threads add 62,844 words across 3,344 tags. Everyone's backstories add 146,024 words across 4,232 tags. That's a grand total of 603,536 words across 26,087 tags for the entire series.

 

plan for noon and plan for night

Subcontinuity, set in Harry Potter Except It Makes Sense. Featuring Ellie as the Girl-Who-Lived, another Ellie as Fleur, and like three different Fates. The primary plot happens in the first seven threads. The eighth is a Very Problematic epilogue and unnecessary to understand the series, though it's canon to later peals.  This series features a lot of adorable magic lesbians, very long character/ relationship development arcs, worldbuilding fixes that don't totally overhaul the setting, and an actual full all-seven-books rewrite. (The eighth thread introduces polyamory and also is more or less porn.) Ellie/ Fate as central pairing. 

This is eight threads long, with 205k words total across 8836 tags (including top posts).

This involves the plan for noon and plan for night set pealing to hope is a knife, a Star Wars sequels AU. The peal thread is foundations of the world. See above for the noon series link and description.

The two threads other than the noon series are 90k words across 4178 tags (including top posts), bringing the total for the peal so far to 295k words across 13,014 tags.

 

Drama Time

These are various Fulmination sets with much more narrative drama than typical. Expect big emotions. Some of these do contain relationship uncertainty or conflict, but it's always resolved by the end.

Introduces the Shmi template, and is one of the first two threads featuring the Eridani template. Current ships are Lily/ Shmi and Eridani/ Lily.

Star Wars Peal (Fulmination)

This is a single page for the assorted Fulmination Star Wars AUs, especially the ones that are part of the Star Wars Peal, branch from it, or feed into it. All Fulmination Star Wars AUs feature a Fate as Anakin Skywalker. Usually Ellie is Anakin's Jedi Master, Elesse, displacing (but not circumstance alting as) Obi Wan. Several of the AUs contain additional Ellies or Fates, and many contain Lily-Palpatines, 2Bs, and Eridanis in various roles, as well as assorted other characters.

Reading Orders

The Star Wars Peal is kind of a complicated beast. You can read each base world out of order just fine, but there's character development arcs that work well if read in a certain order. (They can also be read in the order they're in on the constellation without much confusion or missing context.)

The Base Worlds:

afire world

The world as featured in love set me afire. This is a prequels rewrite, which goes a bit better than the other universes, and which introduces the other worlds very, very briefly when Anakin has visions of each of them. This is a single-thread world. This is also called "afire thread" when discussing it. Historically-speaking, this thread is a reboot of one girl revolution, but is standalone. Afire world is where the other threads peal to.

demon world

The world of got a demon in my soul. This is a roleswap AU of afire thread, where Elesse is in the role of Darth Sidious and Palpatine is in the role of Anakin's Jedi Master. This is a single-thread world. This is also called "demon thread" when discussing it. (You do not have to read afire thread first, though it's recommended.)

baby world

The world of doesn't anybody hold you, baby. This is a bad end AU of afire, set in the years just before the OT, focused on Darth Vader and her children. It features the Eridani and Leia templates as well (Eridani/ Leia ship). This is a single-thread world. This is also called "baby thread" when discussing it. (You do not have to read afire thread first.)

The world of the initiate fear, "the Palpatine redemption arc literally no one asked for." It's set well before most of the other threads, focusing on a Lily-Palpatine who's still a Sith Apprentice, and her slow struggle towards being slightly less of an asshole. Features Lily-Palpatine, Shmi, Eridani, Ellie, and somewhat more briefly 2B and Ridis, as major characters.

The world of eyes of the fallen, which is an intersection of Force Ghost Anakin shortly after Return of the Jedi with Two Sorts of Destiny (an Ellie as a Worm supervillain). Force Ghost Anakin has one girl revolution as her backstory.

An intersection of two worlds - the Star Wars setting in peace is a fiction of our faith, which has one girl revolution plus Stars Ascendant as its backstory, and the Naruto setting in The Worst Genin Team.

The best place to start is probably the one girl revolution subcontinuity. This contains two threads, and is the start of a rewrite of the Star Wars prequels. It's the first thread set with either Fate Anakin and Elesse, and has some early installment weirdness. It's abandoned, but it serves as backstory/ context to some other threads.

The next thread set is Stars Ascendant. This is not a Fulmination set of threads, but is a small continuity introducing the backstory of Darth Occlus, who appears in several later threads.

Next is peace is a fiction of our faith. This is an AU of one girl revolution set after the OT, where Fate Vader survived Return of the Jedi. She meets Darth Occlus, an alt of Ellie who has been in suspended animation since the Old Republic era. It references the Thrawn trilogy, primarily Heir to the Empire, and as such includes spoilers for it. However, familiarity with the book isn't required for this thread.

Next is The Worst Genin Team. This is actually a Naruto glowfic, inspired heavily by hope is a knife. It can be read (and was written) after that instead, if you don't mind a gap after reading peace thread. It peals to peace is a fiction of our faith after the first thread, about two decades or so after peace thread. The peace set and Worst Genin Team on their own are the "shimmering peal."

Next is hope is a knife. This features Force Ghost Anakin in the time of the sequels, with a second Ellie, Fate, and Lily. She has a slightly different backstory than in peace thread which hasn't been written in full, but her backstory is explained on screen.

Next is plan for noon and plan for night. This is a pretty long series and is a Harry Potter rewrite, which peals to knife thread in foundations of the world.

Next is foundations of the world. This is set a few years after knife thread, and about a year or so after the noon continuity epilogue. The knife set plus the noon set are "the foundations peal."

Next is Two Sorts of Destiny. This is not a Fulmination thread, but is backstory for the Keres below.

Next is eyes of the fallen. This is an AU of both Two Sorts of Destiny and of the continuity/  backstory for hope is a knife. Force Ghost Anakin, several years after the OT, appears in front of the Keres in Worm, which is here a planet in the Star Wars universe. She interrupts Two Sorts of Destiny on page 12 (25 tags/ page), but some of the later parts of Two Sorts of Destiny can provide more world and character context.

Next is her lips taste like a loaded gun. This can actually be read at any point before love set me afire without spoiling anything; it's a roleswap AU of Palpatine and Elesse. However, it references characterization and plot events established in hope is a knife/ foundations of the world most heavily.

Next is the initiate fear. This is a divergence somewhat from the focus of the other threads. It's in Dianthus Star Wars (as written by Decima), which has different headcanons and underlying metaphysics than Star Wars as written by Diaeresis. This starts well before the prequels, and was written as an AU of the Legends book Darth Plagueis, where young Palpatine gets a very slow redemption arc. It additionally features an Eridani and a heartsblood Shmi, and is planned to feature a Ridis and a young Elesse (and an infant Anakin). Familiarity with Darth Plagueis helps provide extra context, but isn't required to understand what's going on. This subcontinuity is in progress.

Next is love set me afire. It's an AU of the backstory established in hope is a knife/ foundations of the world, where the timeline diverges after Elesse rescues Anakin due to the presence of heartsblood Shmi. It very briefly peals to and then unpeals from each of the other Star Wars AUs.

Next is doesn't anybody hold you, baby, an OT rewrite featuring the story of the Darth Vader who appears in afire thread. This primarily focuses on Leia Organa and Dalia Palpatine (who's replacing Luke Skywalker), who are doing some accidental twincest. This can arguably be standalone, though the hints to Vader's past will make more sense if you've read knife or afire threads. It is still in progress.

 

Future threads covering the resolution of the shimmering peal, further stories in the initiate fear, and the full Star Wars peal are planned but not yet started.

Naraka (Uchiha Hisame (a-broken-one))

Naraka is an Uchiha Hisame, like Tentou (below), from the Naruto-verse setting. She is a member of the Hisame template. She fairly quickly earns the name 'Naraka' after the peal meets her, due to a name collision with the other Hisame. She is dating the Keres.

The peal met her while she was actively under mind control laid by her older brother Itachi. Tentou killed and then resurrected her to break the mind control. Naraka is not friends with her world's Naruto, nor with her world's Ellie (Elieyha). Naraka has, mostly off screen, grown close with the Star Wars set, especially Ani, after she and the Keres stumbled on the Star Wars group while exploring.

Naraka is two years younger than Tentou.

Tentou (Uchiha Hisame (the-vicious-one))

Uchiha Hisame is the initial member of the peal to go world hopping. She is a member of the Hisame template. She is commonly called Hisame in the early part of mixed with the lightning of slaughter, and Tentou after the peal meets Naraka, another Uchiha Hisame. She is dating The Keres.

Lionheart

Agon (out-of-bones)

Agon is a member of the Lionheart template from the Arda setting. She is currently suspected as a member of the peal, but is not confirmed as such. She works with the Elric sisters and the dragon girlfriends on and off, but she mostly serves as the ambassador for Arda's orcish nations. She is friends with Russet Took. She is unattached to an Ellie.

Bellona Elric (lionheart)

Bellona (aka "Lion" to her sister) is a member of the Lionheart template from the Fullmetal Alchemist setting. She is the younger sister of Elizabeth Elric (aka "El"), and as of she and her furry friends Bellona and El are dating. Bellona is good friends with Estel.

Bellona is a master of medical and dimensional alchemy. As children, she and her sister were the students of Akira Curtis. After Akira died, the sisters used human transmutation to resurrect her - at the unintentional loss of Bellona's body and El's leg. El bound Bellona's soul to a suit of armor, sacrificing her arm. They were later displaced across dimensions to Arda, where they got pulled into the War of the Ring. Bellona destroyed the One Ring at great cost to herself. The possessors of the Three Rings gave their rings to the Elrics to be used as sacrifices to get their bodies back. After that, Arda and Amestris pealed to one another.

Ruby

Ruby (Burning Ruby Tiger Decima (colors-bleed-and-blend))

Ruby is a member of the Ruby template from the Cognoscente setting. She is dating Ellie Walker (aka Nyx) and is very subby.

She uses an artifact to turn into a monster (a tiger, either appearing normal or made of smoke and flame), which gives her a massive and fairly freeform amount of power. She can use a reduced version of her powers when in human form. Ruby introduced her Ellie to the local magic system.
