Info and Indexes (for readers)
Setting: Scholomance
Description: This megacontinuity is a giant many-person RP, sort of like past Tumblr RPs (e.g. Amenta).
How to read:
This megacontinuity may be hard to navigate, since it's extremely large and not entirely written in a linear order.
For this reason, there are a number of indexes which allow readers to read subsets of the megacontinuity in a more organized way.
General indexes:
- Smolomance
- The broadest existing curated index, containing a very large fraction of the megacontinuity
- Up to date through Day 7
- To find threads involving a specific character, you can ctrl-F their name
- Mandarin Scholomance
- The subset of the Scholomance following Mandarin-speaking characters and their companions
- Up to date through Day 4
- scholomance curation
- Contains a small number of character intros and that's it; may be useful to readers who just want a taste
- Scholomance Perspectives (Alicorn)
- Scholomance (Tyrians)
- Daria in the Scholomance
- Scholomance Perspectives (Lotus)
- Jarn's Scholomance Tracker
You can also read the entire thing without use of an index, if you want; good luck.
Useful links and info (for roleplayers)
- Rules doc
- Megacontinuity
- Character info spreadsheet - put your character's basic info into a new line. Their room number will get filled in automatically once you put it in the room spreadsheet (see below).
- Homeroom, Schedule, and Classes sheets exist to help with coordination of those things.
- Basic freshman schedule looks to be approximately: a maths, a writing, a history, a language, Intro to Lab, Intro to Shop, Maleficaria Studies, and 1/hr of maintenance shift per week
- Homeroom, Schedule, and Classes sheets exist to help with coordination of those things.
- Room spreadsheet - put your character in the first sheet to assign them a room. (Most people have been assigning rooms at random, Fletcher has a !shroom command for this.) You can use the different sheets to see what other characters have rooms near yours, calculate the distances between rooms, and see what characteristics your room has.
- Room map - numbering starts from 1 at the 12 o'clock position and increases clockwise. Within each radial line, the eight rooms are numbered going from the outside to the inside, first the bottom layer and then the top layer (example cross-section).
- Room map with taken rooms marked. Up to date as of early morning of Oct. 25, 2021.
- Enclave list - list of the known enclaves, both from canon and the ones we made up. (A sheet on the character info spreadsheet.)
- Enclave map - map of the above.
- Induction time - July 2, 2020, 6:00am UK time, see link for timezone conversion. (In a universe with no covid)
- Availability spreadsheet - put in how available you are for tagging threads
- Spell Examples spreadsheet - for getting a feel for freshman power levels; work in progress. Feel free to add your own. (May include some OP examples that are not mod-approved.)
- Notes on canonically existing objects, spells, etc
- Spreadsheet that filters megacontinuity threads by the characters in them
- If a thread is marked [english] or [mandarin], it's open to any characters that speak those languages
- Levels of the school:
- 5 - reading room, library (with mezzanine-level areas and walkways)
- 4 - freshman dorms, cafeteria (with mezzanine), maleficaria studies auditorium, classrooms
- 3 - sophomore dorms, language labs, stockroom, (probably classrooms?)
- 2 - junior dorms, alchemy lab, classrooms
- 1 - senior dorms, senior seminar rooms, workshop, gym
- 0 - graduation hall
- Most discussion is taking place in the scholomance megacontinuity discord server (if you don't have an invite link, you can ask in one of the servers where glowficcers hang out)
Modifications to canon
The Scholomance of the megacontinuity includes several changes to how the canon Scholomance works. These changes, which varied between intentional and not, include:
- The addition of a mundane nurse (the canon Scholomance has no nurse)
- The weight limit including inductees plus their luggage (canonically, there is no evidence of students trying to change their own body weight before induction via shaving etc., which suggests the weight limit does not work that way)
- Beads and other small objects being used to carry mana (canonically, most power sinks are large and bulky; El's mum's crystals are an exception). We've been trying to shift to following canon on this, though.
- Some rooms have void floors, with grates and a hatch to get stuff in/out of it. The hatch is large enough to let a person though (see: Chantal bullet point on cheat sheet wiki page). (Canonically, there is no mention of void floors, although it seems possible that they exist.)
- In canon, the rooms on the upper level are "arranged cellblock-style, stacked on top of one another with a narrow iron walkway outside the upper rooms". We missed this when doing rooms so we just have an upper hallway and a lower hallway with stairs at the section junctions. (Maybe? some later threads have balconies?)
- Thule exists. Unlike other cases when Thule exists in glowfic, it is not a country in and of itself, but there is an indigenous population in Greenland that does not recognize Denmark's rule and is basically ignored by everyone. Thule has an intensely honor-based society and an aristocracy. (Barrayar. Thule is Barrayar but on earth, that is what it is.)
- Canon puncturing is not allowed, so any canon that a megacontinuity character comes from either does not exist or has a different character occupy the same narrative role. (eg the Harry Potter books do not have a Luna.)
- The canon Shanghai students are from Beijing instead.
Cheat sheet: what has happened so far
This is a non-exhaustive list of reasonably public things that have happened so far in the mega-continuity. Your character may or may not be aware of any particular event, depending on how observant and/or lucky and/or looped into the rumor mill they are. They may also be only vaguely aware of it or misinformed.
Day -180 or so: The Three-Maleficer Pileup
This section is information about the events of LAST YEAR. It is common knowledge for upperclassmen, who may have passed it on to underclassmen they know.
- Over the course of the year, tensions between the students of two small Indian enclaves with a rivalry outside the school ratcheted up and eventually broke out into open conflict at the end of the first semester.
- In the leadup to open conflict, one of these enclaves hired an indie kid (Marco Inaros) to spy on the other.
- For reasons of his own, Marco poached the room of one of the students in the enclave he was spying on and killed a number of the other students for malia.
- The twin brother (Talat) of the poached student was understandably upset by this, himself went maleficer, and killed Marco and many members of the enclave that had hired Marco.
- These murders, combined with casualties on the part of the other seniors who tried to stop the maleficers, resulted in one Oxford senior (Elias) losing his entire graduation alliance and being unable to find a new one.
- Elias, not wanting to die alone in the graduation hall, poached a junior so he'd have another year to prepare.
- The next morning, the rest of the Oxford seniors announced to everyone else what Elias had done and said they would handle it internally.
- Elias and the rest of the Oxford seniors are all dead now.
The following facts are much less widely known:
- Marco's girlfriend (Naomi) had gotten pregnant, and he had poached the room in order to have a nursery for the baby.
- The fact that the baby was born and subsequently died are well-known; that Marco was the father (and the exact manner of death) is not.
- A Sacramento student (Vanya) was dating and mindlinked to Talat at the time and has experienced massive trauma about this.
Day 1 (Thursday):
- Freshmen were inducted on Thursday afternoon (July 2, 2020). There were introductory conversations followed by dinner and more conversations. Many people also went on supply runs.
- The Chicago enclave was destroyed shortly before induction, no one knows how or why. Because of this, a whole bunch of kids from mundane families who didn't know about magic beforehand were inducted.
- Known by: most English-speakers within the first day or two, many but not all Chinese-speakers within the first day or two, spreading further as time goes on.
- Song Lan, a Shanghai freshman, didn't even make it to the cafeteria after induction
- Known by: Chinese speakers with connections within the first day, others slightly later or with a garbled version.
- There's an African kid (Masozi Kamau) with mal-related powers and a concerning aura. The English-speaking enclaves have warned their kids away from him.
- Known by: as of Day 2 lunchtime, a fairly random assortment of people that happened to encounter Masozi or hear about him from someone that did.
- Chantal Myers, a Toronto freshman, killed herself the first night. Specifically, by going into the void.
- Known by: a pretty small circle as of Day 2 lunchtime, but rumors are spreading.
Day 2 (Friday):
- Homeroom and schedule selection, followed by breakfast, Maleficaria Studies (in one huge lecture hall for all freshmen), other morning classes, lunch, work period, afternoon classes, and dinner.
- At breakfast, Alexius Marcus sold eidetic memory potions. By lunch, they were discovered to have occasional unfortunate side effects and also work less well than he thought. Refunds were issued.
- Known by: the people he sold them to and whoever they told.
- Shanghai is considering alliance with Masozi.
- Known by: Sinosphere enclavers starting Friday at lunch, spreading from there throughout the weekend. New York finds this out on Sunday.
Day 4 (Sunday):
- New York, while investigating Masozi, discovers that Sophie Hara (a freshman that interacted with him) is very sick and might have been drained for malia. They also discover that Shanghai is allying with him and consider this to be a sign that Shanghai wants a war. They call a meeting of the English-speaking enclaves, then start talking to the other enclaves to feel out where they stand.
- Known by: NOT anyone except the seniors and decision-makers of the consulted enclaves, initially.
- New York and Shanghai discuss Masozi; he is put under guard in his room and then interrogated via truth potion. New York is not fully assuaged by his answers but then they find out Tintin (a freshman who had been assigned to investigate Song Lan's disappearance) was murdered, which everyone assumes means there is a freshman maleficer targeting Shanghai. New York is not really over the Masozi thing but they're willing to put it down for now, since he at least doesn't seem imminently dangerous, in favor of trying to find the freshman maleficer.
- Known by: Shanghai, New York, some of their allies, Jaipur, Pisa
Day 5 (Monday):
- Holden, a junior ex-enclaver who makes a habit of publicly announcing any important news every Wednesday in the interest of more common knowledge and less horrifying maleficer pileups like last year, announces the events of the weekend -- namely that New York investigated Shanghai's new ally, determined that he is no longer maleficing, and also that there is a freshman maleficer on the loose.
- Known by: everyone.
- Marian, the school nurse, gets a bunch of useful stuff from the Void (e.g. nutrition supplements) and does a bunch of trading to get better medical equipment.
