Background

Berete is the child of cooks from the city near the Viore estate.^1[1] When she was around sixteen, she became the cook and housekeeper for the Duke of Viore.^2[2] She helps him pick out Ayabel as a birthday present for Aelare, although she knew Aelare would not react to owning a pretty female slave the way his father intended him to.^3[3] Aelare believes Berete has guessed that his father beats him, but not how bad it is.^4[4]
