Loel is coru in a way very unlike his mother Queen Judin, and without her crown of elay. His birth blessings are imagination, surprise, and luck. He becomes the coru Prime when he is eighteen, gaining the ability to manipulate water and blood.
Palace Childhood
Loel is the eldest son of King Hector of Welce by his first wife Queen Judin. He spends most of his childhood abused by his father, both for his own "failings" and those he lies about to protect his younger half-brother Isten. When he is nine Kiribel Ardelay discovers the abuse through her mind reading, and issues a standing invitation to the princes to stay at the Ardelay country home. Loel and his brother visit regularly until, at fourteen, Loel runs away to Soche-Tas with Isten's blessing.
Time Abroad
Over the next five years, Loel travels outside of Welce. He spends a year and a half as a prostitute in Soche-Tas, which he describes as "not universally pleasant". He then moves to a small village in Thiyec and spends three and a half years there sewing and cooking before Kiri tracks him down.
Coru Prime
After determining he can breathe in water and is therefore the coru Prime, Loel is convinced to return to Welce. He moves into the Lalindar country home and builds himself a moat. He has not yet returned to the palace, though he has now met all of the other Primes.
