Aelare is the Joker in the Tayane universe.

Background

Aelare is the son of the abusive Duke Halzane of Viore.^1[1] He is named after his father, and nicknamed Hal by Berete, but prefers to go by Aelare as he- standard for a Joker- hates all parts of his birth name.^2[2] He was, according to Berete, something of a terror as a small child; he has since improved, likely at least partially due to his father's disciplinary methods.^3[3]

Meeting Aya and Piper

His father gives him Ayabel as a seventeenth birthday present.^4[4] Distressed at receiving a human as a present, Aelare mostly leaves Aya to her own devices.^5[5] They start to become friends after Aelare is beaten by his father and Aya helps to tend his wounds.^6[6] He and Aya meet Piper not long after, who says she had not previously come forward because Aelare was known to be hard on his furniture.^7[7] Piper has since moved downstairs to be closer to him and Aya.^8[8]
