Ayabel is the Bell from the Tayane universe.

History

Background

Ayabel is a second generation slave who was born on a farm.^1[1] She was sold to an old lady at age six to do basic housework, translations and dictation.^2[2] When she is sixteen the old lady dies and, rather than leaving Aya to herself as she had promised, leaves Aya to her grandson.^3[3] The grandson traded her to a reseller to cover his debts and she is put up for sale.

Viore Estate

Aya is bought by the Duke of Viore as a present for his son Aelare's seventeenth birthday.^4[4] Distressed at receiving a human as a present, Aelare mostly ignores Aya, to her relief and confusion.^5[5] After she helps Aelare treat his wounds after a severe beating by his father, she tells him he has been reliably unthreatening enough for her to feel comfortable with ordinary conversations.^[6]6[7]7 She makes Aelare a picture of a fox he said he liked, and he protects her from his father when she accidentally breaks a painting.^[8]8[9]9

Discovery of Piper

Looking for containers in the attic after Aelare's beating for "breaking the painting", Aya finds a sentient set of pipes.^10[10] The pipes turn out to be a human who fell into a magic named Piper. As a way to communicate, Aya pastes letters to Piper's keys, which Piper can then use to spell words.^11[11] After some chatting, Piper moves herself downstairs to be closer to Aya and Aelare.^12[12]
