Mercy is the Joker from the Circle universe.

Background

Mercy was born a Trader but ran away; how he arrived at Winding Circle is unknown.1 He lives there in Discipline with Stormy, Rook, Sedge, Niva, Serahila, and Elyth because he was getting into fights in the boys' dormitories.2 He can speak Tradertalk and is learning Namornese from Sedge; he can also curse in a number of additional languages, which he is teaching Rook.3

Magic

Mercy is an ambient mage who, though most ambient mages have only one ability, has abilities in both cooking and thread magic.4 He is learning cooking from Dedicate Maple and threadwork and knitting from Dedicate Finch.56 He and Niva are also learning the form of meditation that utilizes stick fighting from Dedicate Finch, because they find normal meditation too boring.7
