Plot

Wen!Wei Ying joins her siblings, Wen Qing and Wen Ning, on their spy mission to Cloud Recesses and attends the Lan lectures. Lan Zhan forms a crush the moment she sees Wen Ying, and is terrified over being attracted to someone so chaotic and probably-evil. She is infuriated and horny over everything Wen Ying does, which includes: being Smart, asking Lan Zhan to supervise her in the library, breaking the wards, writing notes on how to fix the wards, and looking like that. Wen Ying also develops a crush, but she thinks that Lan Zhan hates her. Lan Zhan tries really hard to hate her.

On a late night snooping expedition, Wen Ying breaks the wards (again) and sneaks into the back hill, where she accidentally comes across Lan Zhan bathing in the cold springs. When she steps into the cold springs to hand Lan Zhan new notes on breaking ward improvements, they are both yanked underwater and fall into the Cold Pond Cave. Lan Yi appears and explains to them the threat of the Yin Iron. Wen Ying confesses that she was sent on a mission to retrieve the fragment from Cloud Recesses for Wen Ruohan, but vows to do her best to keep it out of his hands. She has already been planning to overthrow him. In order for Wen Ying to leave the cave, Lan Yi prompts Lan Zhan to share her headband in what may or may not legally constitute a wedding. (It does not, but Lan Zhan continues thinking they are secretly married).

After explaining both the Yin Iron and the Wen siblings' position to Lan Xichen, Lan Zhan receives clearance to take Wen Ying and company along on a Yin Iron fetch quest once the lectures end. On the way, Wen Ying convinces Lan Zhan to try a sip of wine. Lan Zhan becomes drunk at their campfire, resulting in cuteness such as flopping into Wen Ying's lap and pulling her along into bed when it becomes sleeptime. During this, Wen Chao's owl happens to pass overhead and observe some of the lap-flopping cuteness. The next day, the group (now joined by Nie Huaisang) find and meet the Lady Florist in her sequestered home. Once they explain the situation, show her Lan Yi's Yin Iron fragment, and convince her of their good intentions, Flower Lady gives them her shard as well. With Flower Lady no longer exerting most of her power to contain the resentful energy of the Yin Iron, she easily kicks Wen Chao's ass when he later shows up.

Eventually, Wen Ying and her siblings realize that they have wandered into a recognizable patch of forest, and identify the location as their home village. They drag their companions along to Granny's house, where Lan Zhan gets to observe the siblings being adorably comfortable and happy as they prepare dinner. After dinner Granny, who has noticed how Lan Zhan looks at Wen Ying, discreetly drags her off to inquire about her intentions and hint that her own youth was less than staid. 

In the night, Wen Chao pulls Yin Iron-related fuckery. Our heroes hole up in a small, non-evil-goddess-containing cave in the mountains until they spot the owl thing, at which point Wen Ying and Lan Zhan swoop off to kill the owl and kick Wen Chao's ass. After they get back, they observe the un-Yin-Ironed villagers being traumatized and Lan Zhan observes Wen Ying being adorably good with her baby cousin A-Yuan and flees when she can't handle it. 

Wen Qing convinces Wen Ning to stay behind and look after the other Dafan Wens. He reluctantly agrees, after much persuasion, and the others continue on. As in The Untamed, our heroes arrive late to Xue Yang's Chang Sect murderparty. Wen Qing and Wen Ying are bemused to see Xue Yang; he is amused. After lots of taunting, including a reference to Wen Ying doing dirty work for Wen Ruohan, Xue Yang makes the fatal error of cutting Lan Zhan's cheek. Wen Ying beats his face in, just in time for the Nie disciples to arrive and take him into custody. 

Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are present for the Xue Yang event as in canon; as in canon, they acquiesce to having Xue Yang dragged off to Qinghe for judgment and fuck off rather than get involved with big sects. Differences include Wen Ying not revealing herself to be Cangse-sanren's kid when she double-takes at Xiao Xingchen revealing himself to be Baoshan-sanren's disciple. Overall the pair of them end up much more bemused by their interactions with the young people of the major sects than in canon.
