Meng Shi is Meng Yao's mother. She is a notoriously beautiful young woman who carries herself with precision and grace. She raises and educates her son well despite being trapped as a prostitute. Meng Shi dies of illness in the Yunping brothel years before The Untamed canon begins.
History (Original)
Meng Shi becomes widely known among prostitutes at a young age for both her beauty and her ability to read. This attracts the attention of Sect Leader Jin Guangshan, who visits the brothel specifically to woo her. He gives Meng Shi a pearl as a token of devotion, as he does for many of his conquests. When Meng Shi becomes pregnant with Jin Guangshan's child, she holds confidence that her love will return for her and their son; he will buy her freedom. He never does. She never loses hope in the pearl and his promises.
Meng Shi devotes herself to raising A-Yao properly, teaching him formal speech, poetry, calligraphy, manners and polite smiles. Though she knows nothing about cultivation herself, she buys books on meditation and sword forms to teach from. She is preparing her son for life as an esteemed cultivator of the Jin Sect.
She first becomes sick when Meng Yao is nine, a fever that recedes into mild illness which lingers and gradually worsens. Two years later, she consults a doctor, but cannot afford one skilled enough to identify her sickness. When Meng Yao is thirteen, a displeased brothel client beats and humiliates Meng Shi in public; she never fully recovers, physically. Meng Shi dies when her son is fourteen, still believing that Jin Guangshan meant to come back for them.
