Iobel is the Bell from the Hex universe.
History
Background
Iobel was born in South Fork, Marlatia to Raney and Kalars. Her parents divorced shortly thereafter, with Kalars remaining in South Fork where he worked as a police officer while Raney moved to the capital city of Emavan to work as a school teacher. She bound her spirit animal Cricket to be her familiar when she was seven and became a spellbinder.[1] Once she was old enough she opened her own magic shop in Emavan.[2]
Candidate
Iobel is invited to an Equinox Revel party hosted by her great-aunt, where she meets and impresses Lord Nataliem Oteliar.[3] When Prince Edarial expresses an interest in marriage, Nataliem arranges for Iobel to receive a royal order to appear at the palace as a possible bride.[4] Iobel attempts to flee the country rather than comply, but Nataliem's raven poisons Cricket.[5] When Iobel takes Cricket to the palace to be healed, Nataliem and the guards hold him hostage to force Iobel to remain as a candidate.[6]
Marriage
Iobel tries to rescue Cricket, but is unsuccessful. After the candidates are interviewed by a clerk, Edarial selects Iobel's responses from the results and proposes.[7] They are married a week later, and Cricket is returned to Iobel.[8] Faced with inexplicable hatred from Iobel, Edarial retreats into seclusion but eventually he confronts Iobel, and they realize that Nataliem was the real culprit.[9][10] She, Edarial and Zevros promptly arrest Nataliem and Zevros helps Iobel locate his remaining associates.[11][12] Iobel and Edarial then set about attempting to repair their relationship.[13]
Plague
Family
Iobel's mother Raney is a schoolteacher in Emavan, the capital city of Marlatia, and her father Kalars is a police officer in the town of South Fork.[14] Her great aunt is a countess also residing in Emavan, but she and Iobel's family are not close.[15] Iobel is married to King Edarial Cartalian and they are expecting a child.[16]
Magic
Because Iobel bound her spirit animal Cricket to become her familiar, she is now a spellbinder. She has memorized the following spells:
- Invisibility with a six minute charge time and an hourlong duration
- Knock out with a forty second charge time
- Wall walking with a two minute charge time
- Flight with a fifteen minute charge time and a five minute duration
- A spell to freeze water
- A spell which cured her clumsiness
- A variety of healing spells of varying purposes
- A variety of commercially valuable hexes to sell in her magic shop
