Nataliem is the Nereus from the Hex universe.

Personality

Nereus is charismatic, manipulative, and power-hungry. He is mostly unbothered by morals. He does honestly believe that whatever he does is in the best interests of Marlatia, but also that the ends always justify the means.

History

Background

Nereus is the Count of the Northern Isles in the country of Marlatia but lives in the capital city of Emavan. He is a spellbinder with a raven familiar and a powerful spymaster. When Queen Alinaret discovered her husband was sterile, she had an affair with Nataliem that led to twins, Edarial and Zevros. Nataliem monitored the twins closely as they grew and continued to manipulate the political landscape from behind the scenes.[1]

Iobel

After Alinaret's death, Edarial announced his intention to marry and succeed his mother. When Nataliem's first three candidates for queenhood are rejected, he decides his next candidate will be Iobel Swan, whom he had met at an Equinox Revel and approved of.[2] Nataliem arranges for Iobel to receive a forged royal order ordering her to appear at the palace as a possible bride.[3] Iobel attempts to flee the country rather than comply, but Nataliem's raven familiar poisons Iobel's familiar Cricket.[4] When Iobel takes Cricket to the palace to be healed, Nataliem has the guards hold Cricket hostage to force Iobel to remain as a candidate.[5]

Arrest

Iobel ultimately marries Edarial, whereupon Nataliem's role in Cricket's kidnapping is revealed.[6] Nataliem is arrested and thrown in prison, where he reveals that he is the twins' father.[7] Unsurprisingly, this revelation has no impact upon the twins, and Nataliem is left in prison for life for kidnapping, extortion and treason.[8]
