History

Background

Zevros was the older of the twin boys born to Queen Alinaret Cartalian of Marlatia. Because Alinaret's husband was sterile, he and his brother Edarial were fathered by Lord Nataliem Oteliar, though they did not discover his identity until adulthood.^[1] They were raised mostly by tutors, as their parents paid them little attention.^[2] Unwilling to become a spellbinder like his brother because he and his spirit turtle didn't get along, an eight year old Zevros learned sword fighting instead.^[3] Not long after becoming an adult, his mother was poisoned and died, leaving the throne unoccupied.^[4]

Iobel

Upon the queen's death, Zevros was pressured to marry and ascend the throne but Edarial, knowing Zevros to be gay and fearing for the stability of the country without a Cartalian to rule, reluctantly volunteered for an arranged marriage instead.^[5] Zevros resoundingly disapproved, but was unable to talk Edarial out of marrying Iobel Swan.^[6] When it was revealed that Nataliem Oteliar had threatened Iobel into the marriage, Zevros helped her and Edarial arrest him and locate his associates.^[7][8] While questioning Nataliem afterwards, Nataliem reveals himself as the twins' father.^[9]
