Edarial is the Adarin from the Hex universe. He is the king of the country of Marlatia, a practicing spellbinder, and married to the local Bell, Iobel Swan.

History

Background

Edarial is the younger of the twin boys born to Queen Alinaret Cartalian of Marlatia. Because Alinaret's husband was sterile, Edarial and his brother Zevros were fathered by Lord Nataliem Oteliar, though they did not discover his identity until adulthood.^[1] They were raised mostly by tutors, as their parents paid them little attention, and a lonely Edarial bound his familiar Berathyme at age eight to become a spellbinder.^[2] Not long after the twins became adults, Alinaret is poisoned and dies.^[3]

Marriage

Upon the queen's death, Zevros was pressured to marry and ascend the throne but Edarial, knowing Zevros to be gay and fearing for the stability of the country without a Cartalian to rule, reluctantly volunteered for an arranged marriage instead.^[4] Edarial arranges for the candidates to be interviewed by a clerk, and ultimately proposes to Iobel Swan on the basis of her responses.^[5] They are married a week later, but faced with inexplicable hatred from Iobel, Edarial retreats into seclusion.^[6]

Nataliem

After some time brooding, Edarial confronts Iobel and discovers that Nataliem Oteliar threatened Iobel into the marriage by kidnapping her familiar, causing her hatred and fear.^[7] With Zevros' help, Nataliem is arrested for treason.^[8] While being questioned about his motives, Nataliem reveals that he is the twins' father.^[9] With Nataliem dealt with, Iobel and Edarial then set about attempting to repair their relationship.^[10]

Relationship to Template

Edarial has been described as "a thoroughly broken Adarin." Like most Adarins he has a twin Zevi and an Aliya and a Nereus as parents, but his twin is male and he had no Veron to help raise him. He is close enough to his template baseline that his name contains a -dar rather than a -dan.
