History

Background

Never a particularly talented wizard, Lockhart made a name for himself by taking credit for the the deeds of others and casting a Memory Charm on them to cover his tracks. His books about "his" adventures are best-selling and incredibly popular. He was eventually hired as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, where his lies were discovered by Harry Potter and his friends in the course of their fight against the basilisk terrorizing the school. Lockhart attempted to cast the Memory Charm on them to preserve his reputation, but the wand he was using was broken and backfired, taking his memory with it. He then spent the next six years in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries recovering.

Silverlight

Upon learning of Miranda Swan's Patronus and believing it caused by her unusual hazel wand, Lockhart arranges to have the wand stolen. When he is unable to replicate the charm he returns the wand to Miranda, clearing Tamara Reed's name, and he offers to escort Miranda on Dementor hunts. On their first outing they encounter not one, but two Dementors; when Lockhart is unable to produce a Patronus to defend himself, Miranda saves him by summoning a second one with her second wand. His attempts to Memory Charm her into forgetting the embarrassing incident are thwarted by her Occlumency, and he is blackmailed into backing her story and escorting her on future hunts.
